BMC “Next 50 Years” Meeting and Groundbreaking Ceremony Video
On Sunday, January 13, BMC unveiled its projects set to shape Turkey’s next 50 years at a major event held during the groundbreaking ceremony of its Sakarya Karasu Plant. The event was attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar, Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank, senior government officials, and key representatives of the business world. Live connections were also made with the modernized BMC İzmir Pınarbaşı Factory during the ceremony.
In his speech at the event, President Erdoğan stated:
“We are taking a historic step for our city and our future. Today, we are opening a modernized factory employing around 2,600–2,700 workers. We will also witness the test run of Turkey’s first domestically produced 600-horsepower engine. Additionally, we are laying the foundation for the first phase of the BMC Technology and Production Base, a project that will elevate our defense industry. This campus will include facilities for tank manufacturing, armored vehicles, military and commercial trucks, high-speed trains, and metro systems. Once fully operational, the total investment will reach $500 million and provide employment for 10,000 people.”
Strategic Vision & National Engineering
Taha Yasin Öztürk, Member of the Board of BMC, emphasized that this was a historic day for Turkey, saying:
“Under the auspices and visionary leadership of our President, we are taking a major step in the ongoing national and local industrialization journey. Since its foundation in 1964, BMC has become a respected brand with products serving Turkey and exports to over 80 countries. Since 2014, BMC has been operating as a Turkish-Qatari joint venture, combining domestic engineering with a global outlook.”
He added that following the $360 million acquisition of BMC through a public tender in 2014, nearly $1 billion had been allocated for investment and operations as part of a detailed 10-year business plan.
“Today, with a workforce of 3,000, we deliver a broad portfolio that includes military armored vehicles, tactical trucks, tanks, buses, commercial vehicles, rail systems, engines, and transmissions for both land and air applications. Our growing ambitions now require expanded facilities. For this reason, we are laying the foundation of the BMC Production and Technology Base, to be built on 222 hectares and reach 500,000 m² of closed construction area through multiple phases.”
National Engine Ready for Duty
Öztürk also announced that Turkey’s first domestically developed engine is now ready for operation following five years of intensive R&D in İzmir. He highlighted the upcoming commercial success of TUĞRA, BMC’s new generation truck and tractor series, and noted progress in national high-speed train and metro projects.
The company has also undertaken the Altay Main Battle Tank Serial Production Project and is involved in Turkey’s Domestic Automobile Initiative.
